Trump-Xi first summit talks
For the first time since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, the U.S. and China held summit talks on April 6-7. The first sitdown between Trump and his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping received a great deal of attention. Some of the key issues on the agenda were the rising threat of North Korea's nuclear program and the trade imbalance between the two countries. The most notable outcome from the meeting were plans to hold 100-day trade talks to address some of the trade imbalances, but many believe the summit as a whole failed to produce tangible results.

Tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula
In an unexpected move, Washington launched a missile attack against an air base in Syria on the first day of the U.S.-China summit. It was considered an act of retaliation against the Syrian government for using chemical weapons against rebel forces. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, however, also suggested the assault had other countries in mind. Although not mentioned by name, the move was considered to be a warning to Pyongyang. Tensions have been mounting in South Korea, with rampant rumors spreading online about the possibility of Washington launching a preemptive strike against North Korea and triggering a full-scale war.

This week, we sit down to discuss the outcome of the first U.S., China summit and the subsequent buildup of tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

트럼프와 시진핑의 첫 만남, 미·중 정상회담
지난 6일과 7일, 트럼프 정부 출범 이후 처음으로 미·중 정상회담이 개최됐다. G2 정상의 역사적인 첫 만남에 세계의 이목이 집중됐다. 이번 회담에서 가장 진전을 보인 사안은 북핵 문제와 무역 불균형 해소 문제! 북핵 문제에 대해서 미국과 중국은 '위기'라는 공감대를 형성했다. 또한 양국의 무역 불균형을 해소하기 위해 '100일 계획'을 발표하고 세부 방안을 마련하기로 했다. 그러나 이런 성과에도 불구하고 한반도 사드 배치 문제, 남중국해 문제 등에 대해서는 이렇다 할 언급이 없어 대체로 이번 정상회담에 대해서 '아쉽다'는 반응이 적지 않다.

미·중 정상회담 이후 한반도 긴장감 고조
미·중 정상회담 첫날인 6일, 미국이 시리아를 기습 공습했다. 공습의 목적은 시리아 정부군의 화학무기 사용을 응징하는 것. 그러나 공습 시점에 대해서는 논란이 있었다. 왜 하필 미·중 정상회담 중에 시리아를 공격했느냐는 것이다. 이에 대해 틸러슨 미국 국무장관은 한 언론사와의 인터뷰에서, 이번 시리아 공습이 중국과 북한을 동시에 겨냥한 경고였음을 암시했다. 중국이 미국과 함께 북한 문제를 해결하지 않는다면, 미국이 북한에 따로 손을 쓸 수도 있다는 걸 보여줬다는 것이다. 이 때문에 미·중 정상회담 후, 한반도에는 긴장감이 고조되고 있다. 미국이 북한을 선제공격하는 것이 아니냐는 추측이 난무하는 가운데, 한국 정부는 선제공격 가능성을 부인하고 있는데...
